Pass the MRCS are proud to support Women in Surgery Scotland (WISS).
WISS is a trainee-led organization seeking to support, and increase the visibility of, female surgeons in Scotland at all stages of their career.
The landscape in surgery has changed dramatically in the last two decades, with greater diversity than ever before. In 1991 just 3% of surgical consultants were female, in 2019 this has increased to 12.9%. This is certainly progress, however, clearly imbalance remains. Across all medical specialties approximately 35% of consultants are female (51% of medical graduates female) – demonstrating that surgery has a particular gender representation issue especially at senior grades.
WISS was established in 2019 by current core surgical and foundation trainees following the success of the first conference. Their mission is to break down the barriers in surgical training. To challenge misconceptions and to provide a platform to unite and support one another as peers and colleagues.
